It’s time to get splashing! Aberdeen City Libraries would like to invite your early years setting to join us online to celebrate Bookbug’s Big Splash, which is the theme of this year’s Bookbug Week 17-23 May 2021.
We are delighted that partners from across Aberdeen will share a variety of ways to have fun with water both in and out-doors. These can all be viewed on www.facebook.com/Aberdeen.City.Libraries. We would be so grateful if you would share this information with parent/carers/families as widely as possible.
All sessions go “live” at 10am each day and will be available until the end of June 2021:
Monday 17 May – make paper boats with PlayTalkRead. A simple and fun splashing activity to try at home!
Tuesday 18 May – a mini Bookbug session especially for 0-2 year olds all about Splashing in the Bath, with our very own Aberdeen City Library Bookbug session leaders.
Wednesday 19 May – Pond dipping with the Duthie Park Rangers. Get inspired to visit Aberdeen’s parks and do some splashing in the ponds!
Thursday 20 May – a mini Bookbug session especially for 3-5 year olds, featuring an exciting experiment with water from Aberdeen Science Centre, as well as splash-themed songs and rhymes from our very own Aberdeen City Libraries Bookbug session leaders.
Friday 21 May – More science experiments with water from Aberdeen Science Centre and Techfest, with some great free-to-download learning activities.
Saturday 22 May – a bumper story session with storyteller Grace Banks and some fantastic water-loving characters from a Hermit Crab to a Fisherman!
Please also remember to encourage children to enter our Splashing Outfit competition for a chance to win a book prize! The competition template is attached, and we are challenging 0-7 year olds to design an outfit for Bookbug to go splashing– it could be welly boots and raincoat, a swimsuit, or something even more imaginative! They can create their design on the template using colour, paint or collage.
Please make sure each entry includes contact details – early years settings can submit entries c/o the setting as long as an email address is provided.
Photographs of entries may be submitted to Bookbug@aberdeencity.gov.uk
Paper copies can be posted FAO Ruth Taggart to Aberdeen Central Library, Rosemount Viaduct OR handed in to any open library.
Libraries currently open are Central, Airyhall, Bridge of Don, Cove, Culter, Dyce, Mastrick and Tillydrone libraries. Please note that libraries are re-opening with a social distancing policy which includes a cap on visitor numbers, so do not bring groups of children to the library to submit entries at this time.
We are really looking forward to seeing some wonderful outfit designs for Bookbug to get splashing in.
However you celebrate Bookbug’s Big Splash in your setting, we hope that you enjoy this Bookbug Week and the opportunities it provides for discussing the benefits of sharing stories, rhymes and songs.
Thank you, and Happy Bookbug Week!
